Businesses in the logistics and warehousing sector must adapt if they are to win the post-pandemic talent war, according to Lorna Davidson, CEO of flexible working company Redwigwam.

She said job demand in logistics and warehousing was amongst the highest across all industries. “A combination of Covid-19 and Brexit means that there are fewer European Union workers available in the UK for many roles in logistics and warehousing that they would have traditionally filled,” she said.

And this is at a time of high demand, even ahead of peak. “Some leading online brands which are looking to scale up their warehousing team in September to gear up for Christmas have told us to start filling many roles now because their online summer sales are going crazy.” She said the recruitment challenge was being further intensified because of the vast number of people being pinged and having to self-isolate.

Davidson said her company was warning businesses to up their ante to ensure they can attract the staff they need. “They have to be willing to negotiate on everything in order to get the right staff, including paying more, offering flexible work, greater perks and benefits and travel to and from work. They also have to be willing to pay a premium to people working unsociable hours.”
